7 Foods That Boost Metabolism

Exercise is a great way to boost metabolism, but it’s not the only way! The truth is many different types of foods have natural metabolism boosting properties and chances are good that you’ve already had some of them. These foods come in all shapes and sizes and range from meats, vegetables, fruits and even spices & herbs.

However, just because a food has metabolism boosting properties doesn’t mean you should only consume those types of foods. It might seem like a great way to lose weight, but this method will not produce the best results in the long run.

The best way in my opinion is to take these different foods and incorporate them into your daily meal plans using well-balanced, great tasting and easy to make recipes.

Btw, there are a lot more than just 7 foods which boost metabolism, but for the sake of time I just choose 7 of my favorite ones. Enjoy

Boost Metabolism With These 7 Foods

Avocado: The Avocado is a powerful food for anyone who wishes to lose weight. The protein found in avocados help boost metabolism, but the beauty of this food isn’t in just its ability to boost metabolism but in the added health benefits. Avocado provides you with all 9 essential amino acids as well as omega-3 fatty acids which have been proven to improve brain function and heart health.

You can use this super food in almost anything. I actually add them into my smoothies, salads, and pretty much everything else I can think up.

Broccoli Rabe: Broccoli Rabe is a vegetable that is related to the turnip. It is known for it’s broccoli-like buds. What makes this food so powerful is a chemical known as phytonutrient sulforaphane. Eating broccoli rabe can actually stimulate your cells in order to burn fat.

Brazil Nuts: These little nuts pack a double punch for anyone wishing to lose weight. Nuts are a great source of protein which in itself is a great food for burning fat. They convert your thyroid hormone to its active form which increases your metabolism and bodies ability to burn fat.

These nuts also bind toxins in your body allowing them to be discarded more easily. Typically your body can store toxins in your fat cells and contribute to cellulite. These are one of my favorites because I can dump a bunch of them into little plastic bags and take them everywhere with me.

Instead of reaching for a candy bar or sugar loaded protein bar I just snack a few of these to hold me over.

Chai Seeds: Chia seeds provide multiple advantages. They are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and fiber. They also help to suppress your appetite, speed up your metabolism, and increase glucagon which is one of the body’s most natural hormones for burning fat. I actually like to add these into my smoothies when making certain recipes.

I’ve also known some people to add them into homemade salad dressings as well. I actually knew a guy who used to eat them straight up! He would get a spoon full and just swallow them down, but that just isn’t my style, but whatever floats your boat I guess 😉

Egg Whites: Egg whites are a great source of food for improving your metabolism and increasing weight loss. In addition to having no fat, egg whites are a great source of protein which kicks your metabolism into high gear.

White Fish: Fish has added health benefits by providing your body with essential amino acids as well as being a great source for omega-3 fatty acids. The lighter and whiter the fish, the better it is for boosting your metabolism and improving your overall health. Imagine light and flaky fish that falls apart with just the touch of a fork. It’s that easy to digest as well. You can find some healthy, delicious fish recipes here.

Wild salmon and oysters are other fish based foods which are powerful tools in your weight loss arsenal. Wild salmon helps improve your body’s sensitivity to insulin which helps your body to reduce fat around your waistline. The omega-3 acids are a powerful tool for improving your overall health as well as activating the thyroid hormone. This hormone has been proven to increase your body’s metabolism.

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids. They are necessary for human health, but the body can’t make them. You have to get them through food. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other seafoods including algae and krill, some plants, and nut oils.  – University of Maryland Medical Center

Oysters are powerful because they provide a double punch for weight loss. Not only are they low in calories at only 50 calories for every six oysters you eat, but are the richest source of zinc available in any known food. Zinc is known to decrease your appetite, especially those cravings induced by PMS.

Coconut Oil: The final food on our list of fat burning food is coconut oil. When we hear the word fat, we often assume it automatically is a negative word. The reality is that dietary fats are not all equal, and some dietary fats are actually useful in burning fat and even essential for your body’s overall health.

Coconut oil benefits are well known, especially for it’s fat-burning properties. Coconut oil is packed with something called medium-chained-triglycerides or MCTs. Eating these types of fat are actually preferred by the body as a source of energy which means that they are less likely to be stored as fat.

In fact, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study that shows a greater loss in abdominal fat over a 16 week period when MCTs replaced olive oil as a cooking ingredient. Regardless, the reality is that coconut oil provides a great source for boosting your metabolism and increasing your body’s ability to burn fat and shed weight. Macadamia Nut Oil is also a great choice

Although there are many other foods, not on this list, such as caffeine, peppers and etc, these are some of the most powerful foods you can eat in order to boost your metabolism and increase your overall weight loss. The beauty is that the options available allow for a variety of foods and recipes so that you don’t have to sacrifice flavor in order to lose weight.

Keep in mind that you should always strive to follow a solid workout routine in addition to a well-balanced diet featuring these and other metabolism boosting foods. The end result will be a much more rewarding experience.
