9 Creative Ways To Stay Fit This Summer

Summer has a ton of advantages…

More sun, more family time, more barbecues, vacation and generally just a lot more fun.

But with these advantages comes the disadvantage of a mostly unstructured schedule, which can make it challenging to workout the way you were when the kids were in school, more tempting to sleep-in, and make you more likely to indulge on a bit more brisket than you did in February (like I said there are advantages and disadvantages – but mostly advantages).

So how do you stay fit without the structure you’re so familiar with the other 9 months of the year?

Well, there are plenty of creative options.

Here are 9 of them!

Jump Rope

Jump rope is a great exercise to burn fat, mix it up and firm up your glutes as well!

You can switch between single-leg jumps, in and outs, boxer-style, and the standard hop to keep your time under and over the revolving rope exciting and most effective.

You can burn 100 calories in a hardcore 10-minute jump rope session…

And if you have kids, you can even get them involved as well!

Easy. Convenient. Effective.

Perfect way to stay fit this summer.

Outdoor Yoga

Join an outdoor yoga class to soak up some sun, meet new friends, and get a great workout while you’re at it!

The stretching involved in yoga will be a great asset to your summer routine (well, non-routine, really), as it’ll keep your muscles looking long and sexy.

Also, yoga involves plenty of core engagement, so you can rest assured that this outdoor activity will keep your abs in great shape.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is an incredible, full-body workout that doubles as an exciting adventure for you and your family.

When scaling a rock wall, you’ll notice that you use every muscle in your legs to climb, stabilize and stretch…

And even though your legs will do a large amount of the grunt work, your forearms, shoulders, back, biceps and triceps will see plenty of action as well.

Remember to always have an instructor with you.

If you’re afraid of heights, rock climbing is the summer activity that’ll break you of that fear and build some muscle while you’re at it.

Get fierce and send those climbing routes.

Hula-Hoop

Your kids will love doing this one with you!

Okay, maybe not if you have teenage boys… but then again, they might love for a few minutes if you “challenge” them to a hula-hoop match.

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that hula-hooping engages your hips, core and lower back, essentially making it a midsection marathon.

If you hula-hoop for 30-minutes, you’ll burn 210 calories!

So get those hips moving and have some fun!

Hiking

Hiking is a beautiful, adventurous, and effective way to burn fat and stay fit this summer.

Walking uphill in particular is a great way to engage your glutes to keep your booty toned, and your calves muscular.

Plus, the fresh air will be a great change of pace if you’re used to treadmills and the smell of a sweaty gym during your walks.

Take your husband and/or your kids with you.

Make your hike into a nature “I spy.”

Enjoy God’s beautiful creation in a whole new way.

And make sure to bring some water with you! You’ll need it!

Volleyball

It’s time to get your competitive spirit going a bit…

Sand volleyball is a great way to catch some sun, sweat a little bit, and enjoy some camaraderie and laughs with your friends and family.

Whether you’re playing with a beach ball or a standard volleyball, an intense game of jumping, serving, diving, and scrambling for the ball will give you a great workout.

Try not to load the volleyball court with too many players, though…

That’ll make for more yawning than movement.

And make sure you play on a cooler day otherwise the sand will burn your feet!

Roller Skate

Break out the skates and cruise around town, the park, or really, anywhere!

You can involve your kids in this one, but it’s also perfectly okay to enjoy on your own!

Skating involves constant pushing of your leg muscles, and glute and core engagement.

In an hour of roller skating you’ll burn anywhere between 400-600 calories. Wow!

Don’t forget a good pair of elbow and kneepads as well as a helmet…

Better safe than sorry, and don’t worry, you look so good that you can even pull off the retro roller skate look.

Ride Your Bike

This is another activity you can do on a trail, at the park or even on the street…

Bike riding is one of the best activities you can do to burn fat…

As you go up hills, you’ll be forced to really push your body to complete the work you set out to do, and as a result, you’ll rev up your metabolism, and shed fat while you’re at it.

In an hour bike ride, you’ll burn close to 600 calories!

I recommend finding a spot where you can ride without having to stop much for traffic, preferably a long nature preserve or trail.

Chase Your Kids

Your kids will love this one…

Chase them around the house. Chase them around the yard. Chase them at the park…

Running after your kids, or even having them chase you around can act as a high intensity interval training workout of its own!

This is probably the most accessible and common workout for you moms out there this summer.

So don’t miss out on the opportunity to have fun with your children, make memories with them, and burn some calories while you’re at it!
